La Lucha - Durangito

Issues of displacement, environmental degradation, health risks, and educational equity geographically converge in the Durangito, Chamizal, San Juan, and Lincoln neighborhoods.

These South-Central communities are culturally and historically significant, yet are disregarded in favor of profit-driven interests.

Public housing is being razed to make room for Interstate highway connectors and a sports arena. Schools are being closed and children are being herded into schools, of which scientific studies demonstrate high levels of toxic emissions exist from commercial trucks and recycling plants. The assumption is that cognitive development of neighborhood children is being compromised, in addition to the health issues reported by many of the residents.

Yet commerce and construction continue to be the economic drivers. Quality of Life money would best be utilized by creating a community center/library in the Chamizal area, specifically the old Levi Strauss factory that is owned by the City of El Paso.

Perhaps 2017 is a year for our efforts to coalesce around the "Heart of El Paso," and form a sustainable movement that upholds social justice. Many good souls are meeting this Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 5 PM at the Rock House, to discuss organizational efforts. Community engagement is requested. The residents of Durangito and Paso del Sur are leading these efforts.
